The reader will find in Chapter I a description of the organization and purpose of this book. Here I need only say a few words of explanation and discharge the pleasant and important duty of acknowledging help.
The book is mainly a philological study of certain aspects of Sophocles’ plays and is meant for the attention of those who are themselves engaged in the study of the plays. But since, apart from the chapter on diction, I have usually given quotations in translation, the book should be usable by those who read Sophocles in translation only. My line references and quotations follow the Oxford Classical Text of A. C. Pearson.
