Arvind Sharma joined the Department of Sanskrit and Indian Studies at Harvard University, finally obtaining his Ph.D. in 1978. His doctoral work focused on Abhinavagupta's commentary on the Bhagavadgita. He also subsequently translated the commentary into English.
