This book focuses on the teachings of 13th-century Chinese Zen master Shiqui Xinyue. The koans, stories, and poems of the Zen master accompanied by explanatory notes from the editor comprise the bulk of the text, which is preceded by an inadequately brief historical overview of Chinese Buddhism. Those seeking more comprehensive information should be steered toward Arthur F. Wright's Buddhism in Chinese History (Stanford Univ. Pr., 1971). Also, the editor does not name the specific source document for his translation, simply calling it a "collection of Zen teachings." However, the 141 anecdotal teachings are in clear, concise English and the explanatory notes help with the paradoxical statements and allusions.
