Gallichan and Mrs. Arthur D. Lewis. Born in Antananarivo, Madagascar, Hartley was the second daughter of Reverend Richard Griffiths Hartley and Catherine Gasquoine. She was schooled privately and had no formal education until she was 16. Her first job was teaching, and in 1894 she became headmistress at Babington House School in Kent, England–a position she held until about 1903, when she left Kent and her job to begin a career as a writer in London. After composing an unsuccessful novel, Hartley went on to become a prolific journalist and author of non-fiction. She published books on art, Spanish culture and society, feminist issues, human sexuality, and children. She also wrote articles for the New Age, Art Journal, Connoisseur, the English Review, and the Daily Express. Her first marriage was to Walter M. Gallichan; her second, to Arthur D. Lewis.
