The volumes in this series include contemporary techniques significant to a particular branch of the neurosciences. They are an aid to the student as well as the experienced researcher, not only in developing protocols in the neurosciences, but in disciplines in which research is becoming closely related to the neurosciences. Each volume of ''Methods in Neurosciences'' contains an index, and each chapter includes references. Beginning with Volume 15, each volume will be assembled by a different editor. Dr Conn will remain as editor-in-chief of the series. This should further strengthen the depth of coverage in ''Methods in Neurosciences'' for students and researchers alike. Behaviour is the culmination of the gene expression, ligand-receptor interactions, and all the biochemistry that makes an organism. The measurement of behaviours is, owing to its intrinsic complexity, exceedingly difficult, and approaches differ from one research group to another. This volume presents detailed descriptions of the means for measuring a wide range of behaviours. Methods are presented for easy adaptation to new systems. Models include: sexual, reproductive, and maternal behaviours; social interactions; aggression; drug and environment-induced behaviours; amnesia; maze tests; feeding behaviour; illness behaviour; exploratory behaviour; grooming behaviour; cardiovascular responses; analysis of memory; classical conditioning. Comprehensive protocols are included for: assessment of neuropeptide gene expression; preparation of neuropeptide radioligands; identification, solubilization, purification and molecular cloning of neuropeptide receptors
